When do you need temporary car insurance?

There are times when it is prudent to consider whether you need to invest in temporary car insurance. Most of us are somewhat oblivious to the situations when temporary car insurance might be warranted, and unwittingly proceed without coverage. This can pose a significant financial and legal risk in the event something unfortunate should happen, but risk can be avoided with a little preparation.

First, it’s helpful to understand when temporary car insurance is warranted. Here are a few scenarios to help you determine whether you need to seek a temporary policy to cover your driving activities.  It can get convoluted, so we’ve tried to break things down to be a bit more clear.

1.  You’re driving a friend’s car, and…

  • You don’t have a personal driving insurance policy of your own. You are clearly not covered, unless your friend’s own auto insurance contains a clause that temporarily insures other drivers of his or her car against damages and liability.  If your friend’s insurance doesn’t cover you, or if there is no liability clause in your friend’s guest-driver insurance arrangement, you should seek temporary car insurance before driving.
  • You do happen to have a driving insurance policy of your own. The first question to ask is whether your current automotive policy covers you when you drive another person’s auto.  A quick call to your insurance company will answer the question for you.  If your existing policy won’t cover you, your friend’s policy might.  If neither person’s policy covers your guest-driving activity, then you can ask your primary insurer for a temporary car insurance policy.

2.  You’re renting a car and…

  • You don’t have a car insurance policy currently. You’ll definitely need coverage.  You can pay for the rental company’s accident and liability insurance, but you might be able to get a better deal by calling the company that provides your homeowner’s or medical insurance, or that you do your banking with.  You might be able to save some money on your temporary car insurance.
  • You have a current automotive policy for your own auto. In this case, you can check with your existing car insurance provider to see whether they’ll cover you while you drive your rental.  If so, don’t pay the rental company’s inflated temporary insurance price.  If your current policy doesn’t cover rental car use, ask your existing provider for a temporary policy.  It will likely be cheaper than using the rental car company’s insurance.

Taking just a little time to figure out the details of your temporary car insurance situation can save you a lot of headache and expense in case you have an accident.  While you might be a careful driver, there’s no telling when the guy next to you on the highway might make a mistake.
