What is short term car insurance?
Short term car insurance is either an insurance policy, or a sub-clause within a long-term car insurance policy, designed to cover the driver against medical expenses, liability, and other costs should the driver be involved in an accident while operating a vehicle for a short period of time.
When do I need short term car insurance?
The short answer is that any time you’re operating a car for which you would not otherwise have coverage, you need to establish some form of short term car insurance policy coverage. It is illegal to drive without car insurance in every US state, and European car insurance laws are equally stringent. If you’re stopped for a routine traffic violation, or are involved in an auto accident – even one that isn’t your fault – and you are discovered to be driving without car insurance, you are subject to steep penalties and forfeiture of your driver’s license. While driving without short term car insurance may seem an attractive option to save a bit of expense in the short term, it can be a very costly decision in the long run. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
What are short term car insurance coverage options?
There are several different scenarios under which you can be covered by a short term car insurance policy. We’ll outline them briefly below.
- You have an existing car insurance policy, and a clause in your own policy covers you while you drive another person’s car (which may include a rental car). In this case, no additional action is necessary on your part. However, if you happen to be driving outside your home country, make sure that your car insurance policy covers you. If not, you’ll need to establish a separate short term car insurance policy in the region in which you’ll be driving.
- The person whose car you’re borrowing has a policy that covers guest drivers. This is not always straightforward, as the guest driver clause in your friend’s car insurance policy may not include liability, medical expenses, or both. It may only cover the damage you do to your friend’s car in the case of an accident. If your friend’s car insurance policy doesn’t explicitly cover guest drivers for liability and medical (most don’t), you’ll need to establish a short term car insurance policy.
- You’re renting a car. In this case, your existing car insurance policy may cover you for damages, liability, and medical costs in the case of an accident. If not, you’ll need to secure short term car insurance for the period of time you’re driving the rental car. This is usually available through the rental agency, but you can probably save money by calling your own car insurance company to ask for a short term policy.
If you’re going to be driving a vehicle for a short period of time, it always pays to ensure you’re insured by a short term car insurance policy of some sort, and that the policy includes damages, liability, and medical costs resulting from an accident.
